That requirement may present a problem large enough to stall the merger. That’s the glimmer of hope, but the FBS may, at this time, be a fools errand. It’s hard to tell.

It’s clear the MWC isn’t afraid of NDSU at least not because they are good at football. They may be afraid of NDSU for other reasons but be sure, if NDSU doesn’t go,

the money wasn’t there. Also,
  • There is no FBs background so no scheduling bonus. NDSU doesn’t get Norte Dame
  • The stadium size is locked in. No upside
  • Sponsorships don’t pay as well as larger markets
  • Advertising rates are higher in larger markets
  • There is concrete room for growth in larger markets
  • Other
Yes we get it, we're limited by our regions population. It's always been and always will be that way.
That doesn't make it impossible, it just makes it more difficult. Are we afraid of the difficult path? Because if we are afraid because it's too difficult I may need to get behind a different team.

If the money isn’t there for the MWC to choose NDSU first today just exactly what does NDSU do to change that? The line in front of NDSU is pretty long. It’s a fundamental market fact. NDSU seems to know that as do UND, SDSU, USD, UM, MSU. (Don’t forget Idaho they moved back.) None of them are publicly seeking FBS membership either. In fact Montana said no.

If NDSU wants in they need to think Great West Football Conference and build their own. A new division to an existing conference with strong FCS connections or a brand new one.

In the foreseeable future, ready made options seem extremely limited.

Funny, you & I came to the same conclusion. Here's my post from another thread

We may never get that invite. It's looking that way at this point.
Let's gather our peers and create the "Northland" or Snowbelt" or whatever we want to call it conference.
Potential mates...
The Dakotas, the Montanas, Idaho, St Thomas, Drake & UNI
People say no one will schedule us...I don't buy that. All the above schools have staff members with connections who can call in favors. Example, I would think Klieman would agree to play his old school. Entz probably would too. Once a school like K State plays us, the glass has been broken and other dominoes will fall. JMU, Georgia Southern, App State, Stan Houston, Coastal etc would welcome an opportunity to beat us.
Fuck it. Let's stop waiting for someone to ask us and simply forge our own path. We need something to ignite our fire again. This is it.

Or we could keep waiting while attendance keeps dropping and players keep leaving. That might work too?

FBS independent? I'm sure Lakes and I could book a bunch of away games with marquee schools like Western Michigan and Sam Houston (is not a) State.

Don’t know if anything has been announced by NIU. Nothing on their web site. I did see their women’s softball team plays Montana, Southern Illinois and SDSU. Don’t know why NDSU didn’t schedule them.

Because of the holidays, process for Northern Illinois officials to make a decision whether to join Mountain West as football-only member or remain in MAC won’t be determined until January, sources said. NIU has offer to become MW’s 9th football member, sources said

Let's hack into NIU's email and send the following email to MWC....

"Dear MWC, thanks for the invite to your redneck ass excuse for a conference. After much consideration we would rather shove soft butter up a wild cat's ass with a red-hot poker, so please extend said invite to the next in line group of misfits.
Merry Christmas
NIU Athletic Department"
