What they have now pays well. NDSU will go if the money is there. 5 million anti is nearly 1 years FCS football budget and a nice chunk of the much bigger FBS budget.

They know, I don’t. If it’s not there don’t imagine we won’t hear much more than we are now. If it is there James Madison is the new model. I hope the new reality isn’t App State oblivion.

I think the FCS is going to grow more than the G5. They opted in too. Somebody in the FCS cares.

Certainly we are seeing consolidation. Hopefully not a sign of a fading industry.

Excellent article Lakes. Thank you.

WARNING: post exceeds twitter maximum length

They do mention NDSU.

They don’t want the G6 to have their own playoff. Big money wants 2 divisions. Thought that’s what they had. Lines must be getting blurred?
The remainder of the current power conference teams would then be placed in a second-tier league with the best of the Group of Six, and perhaps even some top FCS programs such as North Dakota State.
Starting to sound like my idea. G6 and FCS playoff champions play for the national championship. Promote inter-divisional pre season bowls not counting toward playoffs. If they haven’t opted in no post season.

NDSU may be the only school hoping to shrink into the FBS

2000 NDSU breaks 10,000 enrollment. 2008 enrollment 13,299. NDSU was FCS/D1. 20,000 a certainty.

2014 enrollment peaks @ 14,747. Now 11,592 as it has been for 3 years. That’s suspicious. probably smaller. As institutions drift left they don’t seem to grow or report accurately.

Rumored to be hunting down the 5 mill entry fee seems desperate.. More likely they are also looking for long term commitments to underwrite the budget which will double to a minimum 12 million. I don’t like the layout.

NDSU doesn’t fit the FBS institutional mold. Maybe it’s better to punch up? Idaho didn’t think so.

During the NDSU D1 transition athletics/football were sold as the university front porch. Growth in athletics reflected institutional growth. It seemed to work, then it didn’t. NDSU is smaller now than when it made the move. Game attendance has slipped

Enrollment may drive game attendance. 2,000 fewer students is a lot of community influence lost.

Elevating the program may help attendance. Probably not enrollment.

More research needed but the premise is FCS/D1 move, in the long run was worth 2-3,000 in avg game attendance. In the D2 days. Avg was probably 9-11,000. I saw every D2 game in the building. With the move regional interest really expanded and tv opened up.

Streaming was a help there. It started with one stationary camera pointed at the field, no commentary or ads. On radio commercials were being streamed to a new audience and nobody was paying. The world nearly ended.

FBS would energize some that - attendance/regional interest/media - at least for a few years. Possibly permanent growth of say 20-25%?

In the long run game attendance from 11-15,000 to 15,000 to sell-out. Media rights & sponsorships correspondingly more valuable. Higher ticket prices. Maybe enough to overcome higher costs and loss of traditional rivals?
