Exciting news Lakes but I remain skeptical. They seem pretty positive though. I like the Big Mountain.

Mountain West Conference 2025 & Beyond: “Adapt or Die”
A New Chapter for the Core Seven MWC teams & newcomers as well

Without Boise State, San Diego State, and others dominating headlines and standings, programs like Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah State, and Nevada now have real shots to rise and contend for conference titles. The playing field levels out—and that creates excitement and unpredictability.

The conference now has the opportunity to grow deliberately. Schools like Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, or UC Davis could bring strong fan bases, football tradition, and geography-friendly options for future membership, helping create a fresh and competitive conference landscape.

A tighter, smarter, more cohesive league is emerging—and if these schools embrace their new leadership roles, the MWC won’t just survive.

NDSU FOOTBALL leadership already knows this. We are just starting to see it. The Bison are moving up in 2026 or so.

when the top FBS programs split there will be room for more FBS members. Top programs will be indistinguishable from professional teams. the rest of us will continue as FBS/FCS/D2.

MWC sounds like it’s preparing. For sure the Big 4 are under consideration:
  • NDSU
  • MSU
  • SDSU
  • The Grizz

I’d say 6 minimum for a division with Davis and Tarleton coming to mind. Idaho is likely too. UND will probably want to tag along but may not have the money. I’m not sure about USD.

I do think there will be further change, and I agree with you," Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said on the Nate Brown Show. "When you look at South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Montana State, Montana, they're different than the rest of FCS. And for a school like Wyoming, it makes a lot of sense if there was a way that a few of those schools joined the Mountain West. But it didn't make sense for everybody in the Mountain West. And that's why there wasn't an opportunity for them to join. But in the long run, I think there will be a change.

2028 is shaping up to be a big year with Incarnate Word and Oregon. The rest of the schedule, if I am reading this right will be filled out by MWC games beginning in 2027 and the big MWC Kickoff game in Las Vegas. It’s possible this is a clue that IW will be FBS by then too.

Bison 2028 schedule so far:

I’m expecting some pretty big recruits coming in maybe a top transfer or two for the Oregon game. It’s very likely the Bison coaches are already focused on this game and we might start seeing some signs.
